Digital Blog Post #B - Chapter 2

Sample Digital Blog Post #B - Chapter 2 to demonstrate reflective writing, use of a digital tool to enhance the post and applicable resources.
----------------------------------------------------------------
In Tech Tool 2.1, the authors illustrate a variety of web-based applications related to traditional content taught in schools (Maloy, et al, 2013, p. 25). Since poetry is often a tough subject for students to understand/learn, especially at the secondary level, I found the Poetry Foundation's Poetry app interesting. I wonder if just being more accessible on the student device would make it better for learning. I think it may take more than that, but it is important to consider using tools and items in which students relate and use - it becomes the first step for engagement.

There appear to many barriers to using technology in the classroom - all are very valid, but I believe that between teachers, administrators, students, and parents, those barriers can be overcome. Probably the worst barrier is the teacher's personal attitude - if they are negative about using technology, it will be very difficult to overcome that attitude (though not impossible!) and thus, move forward in effectively using technology for transforming the learning process.

A third concept from this chapter that resonated with me is student centered learning. The focus on constructivism and problem or project-based learning is both very scary and very impressive. It is frightening because it is a major change from the traditional teacher-centered classroom, but the focus on the student really does increase change the engagement level and too many times students just go through the 'motions' to learn - for the teacher and not for themselves. So, I would love to do more to focus on what is truly student-centered learning. I found this video (a  TED talk that was also highlighted in this chapter) that demonstrates how powerful it can be for both teachers and students.

In conclusion, this chapter really took the introduction to educational technology to a higher level with a look at both the negatives and the positives. The emphasis on learning and teaching rather than just on technology is an inspiring way to begin thinking about the world of education. It also demonstrates the important aspect of change - we are always changing and need to be able to evaluate what change is positive for our students. This article further emphasizes the importance of staying tuned on the emerging trends in technology as it impacts education.
